Manzanillo Community Sports Field Project
Led by the Bello Horizonte-Manzanillo Development Association and Sports Committee, the Manzanillo Community Sports Field Project is turning the local field into a safe, well-kept place where kids and families can play and spend time together.
Where things stand
Several months ago, the community took on an ambitious upgrade of the Manzanillo community sports field. Costs have run well over the original budget. Even so, with support from people who care about this community, the work has kept moving, and the goal is a quality field open to everyone and suitable for a range of sports by 2027.
A lot is already done. The ground has been prepared and filled to the right level. Underground piping and sprinklers are in, culverts are laid, the well is built, and the pump and electrical system are installed. The irrigation system has been tested.
What's left to do
The remaining work is split into two phases.
Phase 1: finishing the playing field. This phase covers the grass and the sand base, a 10,000-liter water tank and a pump for irrigation, and four covered dugouts for players. It also pays for three months of field maintenance while the new grass takes hold.
Phase 2: making the field a place for the whole community. Fencing around the field, a sidewalk, stadium seating for spectators and 16 higher-output light fixtures.
Phase 1 comes first. Once it's funded, the field can be finished and put to use, and Phase 2 builds on it.
At a glance
About $58,400 is still needed to finish the field. Phase 1 needs roughly $24,000 of that, and Phase 2 about $34,400. The committee's budget is in Costa Rican colones, so the dollar amounts on this page are converted at September 2026 rates and rounded to the nearest $100. Final costs may shift a little with the exchange rate. Every contribution brings the community closer to a finished field, and to a place its families can use for years.
Why it matters
A sports field is more than infrastructure. It's where kids and teenagers have somewhere good to go, and where neighbors actually see each other. The road here has been longer and harder than anyone expected. But every step so far comes from people who believe in this community and want to give its families a better place to gather.
The Development Association and Sports Committee are grateful to every person and institution who has helped so far. With a few more helping hands, the community can finish one of the best sports fields on the peninsula, and one that will last for decades.
