Security
A multi-stakeholder project to make our community safer, the Security Fund provides preventative and corrective measures to reduce crime, increase accountability, and keep everyone in our community safe.
The Community-wide Security Fund
Cobano District, like much of Costa Rica, has experienced a surge in crime over the past year. From robberies and break-ins to assaults and public safety concerns, we recognize we need a more strategic and engaged response to keep our community safe. To address escalating security concerns in our community, the Nicoya Peninsula Foundation spearheaded a pilot camera-led security project for the community in March of 2025. Based on a successful program run in Tamarindo, NPF has installed a network of 12 cameras placed strategically throughout our community, from Manzanillo to Mal País, with 12/7 local monitoring provided.
In 2026, we are solidifying and growing this program. Monitoring of the camera network has been increased to 24/7, and is being provided by a private security firm out of San Jose. We are currently working with several community groups to distill a more cohesive response plan for receiving community requests and dispatching incidents from the monitoring firm to the appropriate response teams. NPF is also working in direct collaboration with the Policia Turistica to install a monitoring station for select cameras to increase the capacity of the local police to respond to incidents. This project takes deep coordination and collaboration with all of our local stakeholders, including the Fuerza Policia, Policia Turistica, OIJ, the MUNI, CATUZCA, ST/MP ADI, the ACH, Mov Feminista, and Segura.
